No game means no new losses, so the needle backed off a notch. It did not go back to calm. Nobody's that naive.
A week off, and a lot to fix
Michigan didn't play this weekend, which is the only reason the panic meter isn't pegged. The Wolverines are 3-2 after back-to-back losses, 0-2 in the Big Ten, and they get exactly one week to figure out what went wrong before Penn State arrives.
Per reports out of Ann Arbor, the offense was the problem at Minnesota. Michigan managed fewer than 200 yards and was shut out in the second half. Kyle Whittingham didn't hide his frustration after the game, saying the team might have to make some "tough decisions." He said he'd sit down with offensive coordinator Jason Beck and the rest of the offense during the bye, and he's blamed the team straying too far from a downhill running attack.

The timing is cruel. Michigan and Penn State played every year from 2013 to 2023, then took a break, and the last meeting went to Michigan 24-15. Now they meet again with brand-new head coaches on both sidelines: Whittingham in Ann Arbor and Matt Campbell, who came over from Iowa State, in Happy Valley. Whoever loses this one starts a new coaching tenure in a very deep hole.

Well, that's two in a row
Michigan went to Minneapolis as a six-point favorite for the 100th Little Brown Jug game, and came home with a 20-14 loss. The Wolverines led 14-7 at halftime and then watched Minnesota score 13 straight points in the second half.
The first half was the fun part. Jordan Marshall ran in a 5-yard touchdown, and linebacker Nathaniel Staehling, a Minnesota native and North Dakota State transfer, took an interception 79 yards for a score. After that, the second half got ugly: Bryce Underwood threw two interceptions, and Minnesota turned the turnovers into a field goal and the go-ahead touchdown, a 3-yard pass from Drake Lindsey to Darius Taylor early in the fourth quarter. Michigan is now 3-2 and 0-2 in the Big Ten.
The Jug has left the building
For Minnesota, this one was historic. Per the Gophers' own release, it was their first win at home in the series since 1977 and their first win over Michigan since 2014, and fans stormed the field afterward. For Michigan, it was the second straight game decided by a handful of points, and the second straight loss after a 3-0 start.

Where it fell apart
The defense and special teams got Michigan its 14 points, but the offense never found a second-half rhythm. Minnesota's defense, per the AP, overwhelmed Underwood, and every Michigan turnover handed the Gophers a short field. This was a game Michigan was winning at the half and had no answer once the pressure came.
What worked
Staehling's pick-six, a halftime lead
The defense scored, Marshall found the end zone, and Michigan went into the locker room up seven.

Last week the meter was resting. This week it's doing laps.
So that happened
Michigan led for most of the Big Ten opener. It out-gained Iowa 429 yards to 285. It was up 19-14 late, and Iowa missed a field goal with about two and a half minutes left. And then it lost anyway.
Iowa's Hank Brown led a 91-yard final drive, helped along by an unnecessary roughness penalty on Michigan on third down at midfield, then hit Reece Vander Zee for a 16-yard touchdown on the game's last play. Final: Iowa 20, Michigan 19. Michigan is 3-1 and 0-1 in the conference.
The universe has a sense of humor
The Associated Press pointed out the irony right away: this happened in the same stadium where Michigan got an extra second on the clock against Western Michigan in Week 1. This time, the last second belonged to the other team. Four weeks, four completely different emotional states.

The red zone ate us alive
The frustrating part is that Michigan played well enough to win. Bryce Underwood threw two touchdown passes to JJ Buchanan, and the offense moved the ball all day. But two red-zone turnovers kept points off the board, a two-point try after the 49-yard touchdown failed, and Iowa also got a 99-yard kickoff return touchdown in the first quarter. Small margins, all of them, and they added up to one point.
What worked
429 yards, a lead for most of the game
Underwood and Buchanan connected twice for touchdowns, and the offense outgained Iowa by a wide margin.

There was a brief, ugly wobble in the first quarter. Then Michigan remembered it was Michigan.
Okay, we can (mostly) relax
For about a quarter and a half, this had the makings of a third straight nailbiter. UTEP scored twice off Michigan turnovers and the Wolverines trailed on the road to nowhere in their own building — still living in the shadow of the controversial Western Michigan escape two weeks earlier.
Then Michigan scored 38 unanswered points and turned a potential scare into a rout. Bryce Underwood threw two touchdown passes, freshman Savion Hiter scored twice on the ground for his first career touchdowns, Jordan Marshall added a rushing score, and the defense pitched in a pick-six. Final: 52-17. Michigan is 3-0, and for the first time this season the panic meter barely moved.

Bryce Underwood broke off a 38-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, Michigan added a field goal to go up 10-0, and the defense made it hold up, sealing things late with an interception that set up the go-ahead score. Final: 17-10. Michigan is 2-0. Nobody needed CPR this time.
From "sequel to App State" to this, in seven days

Okay, let's talk about what we just watched
Kyle Whittingham's very first game as Michigan's head coach was supposed to be a laugher. A MAC team. A 27.5-point spread. A Saturday that was, by every reasonable expectation, over by halftime.
Instead we got a fourth quarter that aged an entire fanbase a decade, an officiating do-over on a game-ending incompletion, and a Hail Mary that Bryce Underwood happened to hit on the second try. We won. Nobody in that stadium felt like they won.
Yes, we're bringing up App State. Again.
Look, we know. Everyone brings up 2007 the second Michigan looks sideways at a smaller program. But when Sports Illustrated's Pat Forde is out here on debut day suggesting Whittingham was flirting with the worst season-opening performance at Michigan since App State, that's not us being dramatic — that's a national college football writer saying the quiet part out loud, hours after kickoff.
